Our Toddler Room

At Woodberry Day Nursery a child’s transition from the the baby room to the toddlers is made with sensitivity using planned experience sessions with the child’s keyworker and only when we feel each child is developmentally ready which is usually from around 18 months up to 2 years old.

Learning through play...

The toddler roomIn the Toddler room there is a routine to the day which includes circle time, the children are presented with a variety of shared activities at this time which include singing familiar nursery rhymes, number rhymes, the welcome song greets every child by name into the group, we might take off one sock and shoe, put them all into the middle of the circle and take turns looking to match the right shoes and socks to the one we have left on…sorting and matching is an important pre-maths activity and doing it this way is great fun…exactly what learning through play is all about.

We use the early Years foundation stage to guide us in our work with the children

Staff observe children at play and note their interests and progress, these observations are used to inform the planning for the following week

A wide variety of daily activities

The plans are set out for each day and allow children to make self-directed and guided choices to fun learning activities in the messy room, main play room and of course, outside. The main play room is divided into a quiet area, a home corner, construction area, small world and puzzles and fine motor. Our messy room has sand, water, playdough, painting model making, and exploratory play such as gloop! (cornflour mixed with water….it has a wonderful consistency) a variety of these are planned for and offered every day.

Encouraging language development

We recognise the importance of our role in the each child’s language development and the importance of individual conversations; staff talk with the children and show interest in them by listening tentatively to what interests them.
We encourage co-operation through planned small group activities where children work together and at tidy up time where children are encouraged to work in pairs.
